If You Love Candles, You Will Want To Read This Candle Lore...
Candles were one of the earliest inventions of the ancient world. Many ancient civilizations used candles to illuminate their religious ceremonies, in which a plant or a stalk of mullein was dipped in wax, and carried as a torch for religious observances. Although it is noted that the early inventors of candles were from Egypt and Crete dating back to 3000 B.C., the Phoenicians are credited for the usage of the wick candle as a light source. In A.D. 100, Greek and Roman candles were made of flax threads coated with pitch or wax. In Africa, oily nuts were burned in clay saucers and strung on twigs for light. Early Chinese and Japanese candles were made with wax derived from insects and seeds molded in paper tubes.

In the Middle Ages, beeswax was introduced as a primary ingredient for candles. Beeswax gained its popularity because of its ability to burn pure and clean without producing a smoky flame or acrid odor when burned. Because beeswax was so expensive, paraffin wax later became the preferred ingredient in the economical production of candles. With the introduction of the light bulb in 1879, candle use declined as people turned to electric light for illumination. Today, candles are used for celebration, reflection and meditation.

However, paraffin, a petrochemical, has recently become a major cause of concern for individuals worried about indoor air pollution, along with concern about zinc or lead content in candlewicks. When a candle burns, the liquid wax is drawn into the wick and used to fuel the burning flame. During this process, the liquefied wax vaporizes and the wick burns away, filling the room with the candle's scent, and with the chemical content of the wax and wick as well. Concern about inhaling petrochemical vapors has led to development of clean-burning, inert vegetable waxes, such as soy wax, which is solidified soybean oil, and metal-free cotton wicks.
